Here are ten tips to keep in mind when you play poker online:
1. Watch for the table speed when playing for small stakes. The game moves very quickly and you are timed out and folded if you don’t make a move on time.
2. Don't get carried away with the excitement. You will feel a rush of adrenaline when you play at first and win your first few hands but always stay focused and don’t be tempted to bet the next hand because you’re “on a roll”. Also, don’t go off course and try to “chase” a loss by betting on the next hand in anger or frustration. Bide your time until you get the right cards.
3. Try and watch the other players and learn their moves. It is hard online but you can tell a hesitant player by the length of time he takes to play. He may be playing a poor hand and will fold if you raise him.
4. Set yourself a goal and walk away when you achieve it. Whether it’s an hourly or daily target, quit when you’ve achieved it. There’s always tomorrow.
5. Remember you are playing by a system, don't get involved in "lucky streaks".
6. Be aware of potential internet connection problems. If you get disconnected and cannot reconnect in time your hand will be folded.
7. Play free tournaments - Freerolls - for prizes, it will sharpen up your game as you'll be against the big boys. Anyway it's fun, free and you might even win something!
8. Be aware of the boredom factor that can occur if you’re playing for long spells. Take regular breaks rather than allowing your concentration to slip.
9. Don’t get complacent when you start to win. Remember if you lose your discipline you may well be beaten by a “tight” player who’s only playing very good hands.
10. Be sure you know why you’re doing this. If you love playing poker and you don’t mind losing then fine, take more chances. But if like me your main focus is to earn more money – stay disciplined and stick to the plan.
